Giant Toad is a Boss in Nioh. Pronounced "Giant Toad." The Giant Toad is, as its name implies, a yokai in the form of an enormous toad. This one is even larger than a human being, capable of standing on two legs and even wielding a spear. Legends say that toads, which are long lived, are particularly capable of attaining consciousness and turning yokai, but there are other theories as well.
This particular yokai's original form was Hattori Hanzo's father, the first Hanzo to bear the title. Feared as Oni-Hanzo for his ability to lead the Iga Clan, he forced those who would succeed him to undergo harsh training. It seems this devotion to the future of his clan bound itself to this world, and transformed into the form of a Giant Toad to continue training his successors.

- Giant Toad is found in The Iga Escape Main Mission within the Tokai Region. To access the boss, the player must complete Mission 9: The Demon of Mount Hiei
- Giant Toad is also the boss of The Giant Frog Brawl Sub Mission.

Combat Information

- Most moves can be blocked including his spear attacks, ground slam and sticky bomb explosions.
- Get behind him and score hits when you can, he will often follow up with a ground slam which you can block or if you have time dash away from.
- After blocking Giant Toad's spear attacks, you can score hits then use Katana's Swift Step or similar to quickly dash behind him to safety.
- Ninjutsu's blinding shell makes Giant Toad miss badly on all his bombs and tongue attacks

Strategy 1 (Melee)
While the toad is slow moving, it deals high damage and can one hit you if you play carelessly. Use low stance and dodge behind him to land some attacks. This will usually prompt him to jump into the air and attack with a ground smash. This can be blocked, but with high Ki cost. Preferably, when he jumps, dodge away. When he prepares his spear attack, dodge towards him to attack. Get to his back to trigger a repeat of the jump move. Once his health drops to 50% he throws a variety of explosives at you. Dodge towards him when he's about to attack to cause him to miss. Preserve your Guardian Spirit until his health is at about a third left. You can use ranged weapons as well to get some damage dealt.
The boss only has a small amount of attacks, and they are all relatively easy to avoid as they are heavily telegraphed. The attacks are as follows:
- Spear thrusts (3 hits - 2 side swipes then one lunge) - Run to his left and behind him as he starts this combo and wail on his back.
- Single Spear thrust - Again, just run/dodge left behind him and go ham on his back.
- Pipe Swing - He swings this back then charges at you with it. As soon as you see him pulling his arm back run to a side (Left is best) and wail on him again.
- Bomb throw - If you keep you distance from Toady he will start using projectiles. One of these is bombs. They hurt. They will be thrown in a curved line, so run forward towards him to get more hits off on him.
- Crystal projectiles - Toady will fire a line of projectiles at your head. Blocking is key here. There are 2 types of crystals he can throw, one of them is a kind of sticky bomb. Should you miss-block one, you may get stuck. There is a 3 second or so delay once you are stuck, but you can premptively block as it detonates to not take any damage.
- Butt Slam - This is perhaps his most obvious move - Just stay away from him, ideally around to his back and deal some more damage.
- Tongue grab - Should Toady look at you and stay still for a second, he is most likely going to tongue grab you. He fires his tongue at you and it deals a fair amount of damage. Just a dodge to either side easily avoids being caught.
Strategy if you can't dodge his attacks
- Sprint to the left and towards him, get behind him
- 80% of the time, he will do the jump slam if you are behind, even with low parry stat, you can block it
- After the slam, sprint and circle him to the left, get behind him, and perform a quick attack
- If close to him, sprinting to his back leftwards avoids almost anything aside from his jump slam
- This strategy is slow, as your hit window is small, and you have little ki to invest in attacking after blocking, but it is very easy
- you absolutely have to dispell his yokai realms, else you run out of ki
- Kekkai talisman is nice here, and so are guarding ki reduction passives
- If you need to heal, running away will get you speared. Just get behind, block jump, get behind, and heal instead of attacking this time

Strategy 3 (Bow)
A really simple way to deal with the Giant Toad is to use Fire Arrows at a long distance; shooting it in the head will result in massive damage and easily take out the boss with a few swings as soon as his health is depleted low enough.

Attacks
Giant Toad has two attack phases. In the first phase, he uses melee attacks. The second phase is triggered at 50%, where he will incorporate ranged explosive attacks into his offence.

In addition to excelling at leaping attacks, its long tongue can punch its pipe outward for long-range hits. It can also use the pipe's smoke to conjure the Yokai Realm in order to toy with its enemies. Only a true powerful warrior stands a chance at beating this monster amphibian.

Pretty easy boss, but also quite fun, IMO. Feels more like a Souls boss than a lot of the others. I also love his presentation. Favorite boss so far. I love frog dad. <3

Best way is to stay close and keep going around to his back. His jump attack is can be intimidating, but it's not nearly as strong as some of his other ranged attacks. With strong enough armor you can even tank it and chug elixir while whittling down his hp.

Lmao he was so *****ing easy. Just use sloth talisman and weakness talisman and power pill. Take down a good amount of health and then use living weapon. Got him first try, and I’m not even a badass.

If you're not used to dodging and using INV frames, he can be incredibly intimidating. In the beginning I couldn't get the right feel for his timing and became frustrated and afraid of him, which is the worst position to be in, because it caused me to keep distance during his bomb throws ... took me a while to realize, that by keeping distance I was basically doing what he wanted me to do .... remain in bomb range. Once you get the timing down for his 3 main attacks (jump stab, sideways slice, forward stab) and stay close to him during his 2nd and 3rd ninjutsu bomb waves, there's not much he can do. I loved this boss. Made me smile every time he took a puff from his pipe. Even when he smacked me around with it.

You want to crowd this boss, and flank him through out the fight. Get the timing of his spear thrust. Don't dodge too early and roll to the side. He will be near you and you can counter him. I can sneak 3 midstance sword blows. The only time spear thrust is not an opening is his last phase. His three hit will evolve into a four hit combo, with a jump attack after the thrust. Frogs response to flanking his back is often a jump; where he will turn mid air and land with a shock wave. You can roll forward and get into his back again. Then land some hits. You must be more aggressive by phase two because he will spam ranged attacks. It won't be safe to be far from him. If he tags you with a timer bomb, you can dodge the main blast by iframes, just roll at the right time; though it will be a case of luck because you can't really tell when it will explode,( no warning animation, it just blows up after a time). If you want to heal, it's best to be patient and let an attack pass. His spear is very long and he will jump to you. He might interrupt a poorly timed heal and get you instead.

He is weak to arrows. He loses an absurd amount of health being shot by them

I killed him in 30 secs just by shooting his head with exploding or whatever arrows that do more damage. It took only 5 arrows

He has another attack. He eats you...does horrible damage.
Did it just once when I was standing directly in front of him, activating my Living Weapon.
Has anyone seen him use ninjutsu when he's above 60-70% health?

One of the unique drops from this boss is called the "Giant Toad Spear", and he can also drop "writhing tongue".

This boss is pretty easy if you follow souls logic, and hug him rotating left. Fire, and Lightning if I remember right. Lightning makes bosses a joke if they can have it applied to them.
