Senji Muramasa Lore & History

• Senji Muramasa (千子 村正) was one of Japan's most famous swordsmiths, becoming a legend within his lifetime. He is often contrasted with Masamune. He founded the Muramasa school of swordsmithing during the Muromashi Period (roughly 14-16th century) with the earliest known example of his work being dated to 1501. His school's style of crafting emphasized sharpness, though his blades fell out of favor due to the rise of the Tokugawa Shogunate.
  Tokugawa Ieyasu himself despised Muramasa-made weapons due to losing many friends and family members to them as well as being badly cut by one and thus he forbade his men to wield them. This led to the myth that weapons that held the name Muramasa were bloodthirsty and could not be returned to their sheathes unless they killed first or could even infect their wielders with bloodlust.
