Sentry is an Enemy in Nioh.

Sentry Description

"Sentries are statues that move through the power of a spirit-stone. Carved in the form of ancient warriors, they are placed out of sight at tombs, sacred domains, and the like as guards. When they detect an intruder, they immediately attack."

"Sentries move slowly, but a single blow from their massive swords can be fatal. They are also very hard to destroy, being made of stone. It is not clear exactly how they are triggered into action or how to stop them, so the safest course of action is to give them a wide berth."

Combat Information

• Blocking is effective against Sentries.  Their slow strikes are not hard to dodge, however, which should be the preferred option.
• When attacking, a Sentry is vulnerable from behind.  Most of their strikes are direct overhead swings with little horizontal tracking, giving one ample time to launch a counterattack from the other side.
• Sentries seem to take much more damage at certain points during their attack cycle.  These seem to be when the glowing orange beneath the stone armor is visible.  Attack quickly and from the sides or back to take them down quickly.
• Use long reach weapons, Sentries move very slowly, and have a very predictable attack cycle, making them very easy to bait using a long reach weapon like the Kusari-gama's high-stance heavy attack.  It is quite easy to completely kill the Sentry without ever stepping into its reach.
• They are very weak to elemental damage, especially Water, but they are immune to Earth: a single Kayaku-dama may be enough to ignite a sentry.
• Do not attempt to defeat the Sentry by depleting its Ki.  These Yokai have great stamina and will almost always die before their Ki runs out.
• Scan any room with Sentrys with your projectile weapon before you enter. Shoot any of them that cause your target rectical to turn red. Hit them with a head shot and you'll completely destroy them WITHOUT waking them. Real Sentries can also be identified by their lighter hue.

Attacks

• Vertical swing : slashes downward, and then upwards. The second move can be omitted if the player won't get hit. Damage and break of the move are high. Very easily avoided with a side dodge, as horizontal hitbox is tiny. Can be baited and sidestepped, this way you can hit the enemy while it glows, taking much higher damage. Will likely trigger if the player is in front at poke range
• Horizontal swing : hits in an arc in front of it. Easy to avoid by stepping backwards, dodge invulnerability frames allow to step through, with correct timing. Ofter triggered if the player is at the sides or back of the statue
