Date Masamune is a Boss in Nioh.

Date Masamune was a feudal lord who based his forces in Aoba Castle (present-day Sendai City in Miyagi prefecture). Highly skilled and ambitious, he was feared thoughout the land as "The One-Eyed Dragon" due to his missing eye. Although he wore an eyepatch, it was said that he was able to see the unseen, including various types of yokai. Assisted by Katakura Kojuro (Shigenaga's father) and Date Shigezane, he conquered the land of Oshu from his base of Yonezawa Castle in Dewa province (present-day southern Yamagata prefecture) in just five years, but was forced to surrender to Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who had conquered much of the country and set his sights of Odawara (present-day western Kanagawa prefecture) as part of a northern expansion. Later on, he opposed Gamo Ujisato and Uesugi Kagekatsu while secretly waiting for his chance to conquer the land, but the Battle of Sekigahara ended sooner than anticipated, bringing with it an end to the longstanding chaos. Afterwards, he demonstrated allegiance to Tokugawa Ieyasu, if only on the surface.

  • In his Wind Living Weapon mode Masamune can cancel out of Raijin and has absurdly long combos as well as extended
range with his lunge grab attack, it is best to wear his stamina down and play the long game for this phase.
  • In his Water Living Weapon mode Masamune gains tons of projectile attack combos that are unblockable under most
circumstances, and will be much much less aggressive than his Wind mode.

Tip:

Masamune's dash-stab attack is dangerous.  However, the stab attack is much less likely to catch you if you are circling (dodge, run, or even walk) to the right than if you are dodging the left (clockwise).  This still works when he is in wind LW form and his dash goes even farther.

Strategy 1 (Melee)

Date Masamune is a pretty fast enemy and it might be hard to hit him with a slow and heavy weapon (like Axe or Odachi). If you see his sword flashing make sure to keep your distance or be ready to dodge, he will do his grapple attack, which is capable of insantly killing you if you wear light armor. When he activates his dragon's Living Weapon (wind element) his grapple move's distance is increased by approximately 50%, so it is advised to dodge to the side rather than back. When he activates water element Living Weapon, he will either throw 3 water balls that leave water pools on the ground or send water-element shockwaves from a distance (similar to Ishida Mitsunari). You can either dodge his shockwaves (but it requires a good timing) or block it, but blocking it will build up water debuff pretty fast. Make sure to stay away from water pools because it will build up water debuff even faster than shockwaves and will do a decent amount of damage. So it is advised to keep your distance and dodge his shockwaves until his Living Weapon is exhausted.

Yokai Lore / History

Date Masamune was a feudal lord who based his forces in Aoba Castle (present-day Sendai City in Miyazaki prefecture).

Having lost his opportunity to seize power, Masamune sought Spain's help to utilize the power of Amrita. With both Kojuro and Shigezane declining in strength and desperate to realize the dream the three of them had shared, Masamune struck an unholy deal with Maria. However, after being defeated by William and learning that Shigezane had been cured by the sacred waters of Mount Ibuki, he determined that it was not his time to rule and withdrew his forces accordingly.

Masamune was a man of culture, well—versed in the arts of theatre and song, but it is said that he favoured cooking above all other hobbies. In the beginning, his interest came out of developing provisions for his troops, but he is known for creating a wide variety of cuisine, including frozen bean curds and "zunda," a dish featuring boiled and mashed green soybeans. There were many miso (fermented soybean paste) storehouses built through the town surrounding Aoba Castle, which is said to be the first location in the country to engage in large—scale miso production. A collection of Masamune's sayings illustrate his thoughts on cooking with the following quote: "A properly served meal is one modestly prepared by the host himself with ingredients appropriate for the season."

Alright here's a braindead easy (if not time consuming) way to deal with Date-san over here.

Odachi mid stance parry move (Cuckoo something?) his non-LW stance. If you spam it over and over he can't do ****, it'll interrupt everything he's got, including his unblockable (if you're doing it close). You might take some mild chip damage but that is okay. You can also just wail on him with Odachi mid attacks and he will be forced to sit there and eat them, but that's riskier.

Once he pops his wind LW, drop a poison groundfire trap. He will run right into it and get poisoned. Now just run away/kite him till he runs out of Ki. You can also throw fire magic shots at him until he's burning if you want a little more damage.

When he pops water LW, you should throw a poison egg bomb at him. If you hold sprint and circle strafe him left or right his attacks will miss. Just stay at max distance so he doesn't do the combo.

He'll just flip between these 3 stances. You CAN punish wind/water LW attacks if you're sharp, but the ez strat is to let it run out by itself.

Holy crap this guy was annoying. That's two DLC bosses that just oneshot me. PLEASE tell me the other bosses aren't going to be like this.

Anyways, groundfire traps and caltrops are the way to go. Groundfire will knock him into the air so you can do a ground finisher and caltrops will slow him down if you ever need breathing space.
When he pulls out living weapon, quickly pelt him with paralysis pellets. With any luck he'll get paralyzed so you can riposte him. Paralysis groundfire traps also work. Once he's out of LW, go back to normal groundfire. Rinse and repeat.

I recorded a coop fight vs Date Masamune in way of the Demon. His HP are around 80,000, maybe a bit more. Fighting him alone (always in Way of the Demon) I believe his HP are around 60,000. It makes sense because Maria has about 57,000 HP (always in Way of the Demon and fighting her solo).

The hell is up with those "strategy" sections? There's not a single strategy there, it's just naming the attacks he does and says to dodge... Yea no*****. This wiki sucks
