Clan Analysis

The Hosokawa clan were the founding rulers of Izumi province (present-day southwestern Osaka prefecture), who also held Tango province, Kokura in Buzen province, and Kumamoto in Higo province (present-day northern Kyoto, western Fukuoka, and Kumamoto prefectures respectively). Their best-known leader was Hosokawa Tadaoki.

Tadaoki was the eldest son of Hosokawa Fujitaka, retainer to the Ashikaga clan, and served Oda Nobunaga alongside his father. After the Honnoji Incident, Tadaoki served the Toyotomi clan, where his deeds earned him a place as one of the "shichisho" or seven great generals. After Hideyoshi's death, he was awarded Buzen province by Tokugawa Ieyasu in recognition of his distinguished feats at Sekigahara. His wife, Akechi Mitsuhide's third daughter Tama, was taken hostage by the Ishida forces and later took her own life due to Tadaoki's alliance with Tokugawa.

The Hosokawa family crest is called the "kuyo", and depicts the sun, moon, and other astronomical bodies. Ever since his youth, Tadaoki admired the kuyo design on Nobunaga's armour, even going so far as to ask that the great warlord allow him to use it as his family crest. The request was duly granted and the kuyo was used by the Hosokawa clan henceforth.
