Maria is a Boss in Nioh.

Maria is a Spanish woman who served by the side of Date Masamune, the conqueror of Oshu. However, Maria's blonde—haired beauty belies her sharp wit and vision; she is no ordinary attendant.

Strategy 1 (Melee)

Maria can be easily staggered in melee, so just pressure her and be sure to dodge her attacks. After losing ~30% health she will enchant her sword and become immune to staggering. She also will send a single wide shockwave from distance, which is hard to dodge due to hitbox but can easily be blocked, though it usually guard breaks you. Make sure to dodge A LOT when she's in second phase (enchanted sword), because she usually does long combos and capable of guard breaking you. Hit in between her combos. Easiest way is to bait her shockwave, dodge forward through it and land a couple of hits. Low stance helps a lot because you will spend most of the fight dodging her attacks.

Strategy 2 (Ranged weapons)

Maria, being human, is easily staggered by gunshots and arrows to the head. Shoot her before she enchants her weapon (or directly after if you're quick enough) and she will drop to the ground. Run up to do a final blow. Repeat until dead.

Strategy 3 (Ki damage)

Maria is resilient to ki damage but because of her aggressiveness, she burns through it rather quickly. Use this to your advantage. When she shoots out the amrita waves, dodge through them until you are close to her and hit her with a blast as she recovers. Only one blast as she will interrupt you if you try another one. When she is up close, dodge and use sword ki to chip away at her ki. When her ki is gone, charge your Iai attack and hit her to knock her down and then use final blow.

Yokai Lore / History

Maria is a Spanish woman who served by the side of Date Masamune, the conqueror of Oshu. With the Date family's deep ties to Spain, it was said that many Spaniards earned Masamune's favour, including an envoy of the king of Spain, who received an audience with him. However, Maria's blonde—haired beauty belie her sharp wit and vision; she is no ordinary attendant.

In reality, she is an undercover spy whose mission was to create chaos in Japan in order to capture Amrita and use it for the glory of Spain. Since its naval defeat to England, the Spanish Empire was a shadow of its former self, and hoped to use Amrita to regain its status as a world power. However, thanks to William's efforts, Masamune's rebellion was quelled and Maria was forced into hiding. However, her words upon departing hinted at much greater chaos and discord yet to come.

Maria is highly skilled with a rapier, and is also capable of sorcery using the power of Amrita. She can also use techniques that resemble ninjutsu, causing Hanzo to describe her as a Spanish ninja. Her primary objective is to complete her mission, and as such she prefers to avoid conflict, but her skills in battle should not be taken lightly.

I absolutely DESPISED the two Date bosses before this. One-shotting bullshit bastards. But Maria. I LOVED this boss. For one, she didn't one shot me. AMAZING. It's amazing just how much fun you can have when the boss can't wipe you off the map with a sneeze. And I could actually block her. For the two Date bosses, if you block an attack, it'll drain all your stamina and the follow up will kill you. For Maria, I could block a decent chunk of her combos. Not all of it. I usually ran out of stamina and took a hit. But it wasn't a death sentence. And since I wasn't getting one-shotted, I could actually learn the moveset. INCREDIBLE.

I love the moveset. I love the back and forth dance we had in our fight. The one-shotting BS nature of the Date bosses meant I spent more time running laps around the arena than fighting. But Maria's speed and aggression and certain attacks means running away is bad. If I didn't want to get lit up I had to stay in a middle zone, one that baits out her attacks but I can roll to a safe distance and let her swing at air. Really, I don't have too many complaints about her.

The tactic I advise is the double sword, a daiba washi spirit, and the guardian spirit talisman. I used middle stance and ended every combo with a kick. This kept her stamina low so she couldn't get too aggressive on me. With any luck, you can riposte her too. When she begins to engage living weapon, back up. That summoning also comes with blast that will hurt you. Got killed more than a few times because I forgot that. When she activates LW, use the guardian spirit talisman and daiba to knock her to the ground, letting you groundstab and you knock her out of LW. Then it's back to normal. Rinse, repeat. I got it with 6 talismans.

Find the middle zone. Too far and she will chase you around the arena. Too close and she'll be very aggressive. Find the sweet spot where once she attacks, you can roll back and she'll do entire combos harmlessly in the air. Her grab is normally preceded by a dash in. So if she dashes in, dodge back. Sometimes it's nothing but you really want to chance that 7/8th of a health bar grab? One you get a combos going, you can stun lock her. I also had the ability where if my attack gets blocked I can dash behind the person. That was also immensely helpful.

DO NOT run too far if she has LW active. She has a ranged energy slash that will go through your block and even blocked this thing is devastating. Try to use daiba to knock her out of LW as soon as possible.

I absolutely DESPISED the two Date bosses. One-shotting bullshit bastards. But Maria I had a BLAST fighting. For one, she doesn't one-shot you. AMAZING. It's amazing how much fun you can have when the boss can't erase you with a sneeze. And since I don't get wiped out in one hit, I could actually learn her moveset. And I can even block her. The two bosses before? You block you get all your stamina drained in one hit then the follow up kills you. While I can't block her entire combo (the last attacks hitting me) I can block enough to get away.

The way I went is dual sword, the daiba spirit, and guardian spirit talismans. I also had the talisman that creates a shield that absorbs a set amount of damage. For dual sword, I had it in middle stance and ended every combo with a kick. This kept her ki low so she couldn't get too aggressive. When she activated LW, I used the GS talisman to knock her down then do a ground stab. Knock her down as soon as possible because she does not stagger in LW and has a beam attack.

Also, try to stay at medium range. Too far and she'll do a beam attack with LW or will chase you to close range. At close range, she'll just be completely aggressive. At medium range, you can bait out combos and roll away, letting her hit air. Then close in and hit her a couple times. Be wary that she has a grab but she usually dashes in to perform it so if you see her dash in, dash back.
Also, I'm pretty sure her LW drains amrita. I usually equip the phoenix spirit cuz once I die, it'll automatically activate. But It never did for me when fighting maria and when picking my spirit back up I was always just short of full even though I was definitely full before.

For the peoplr who has problems with this boss.

Equip yourself with Daiba Washi GS. Carry a bunch of GS talismans.

Pre-buff yourself before entering the arena, and then rush into and stay near Maria when she is making the initial animation.

Use GS talisman. Daiba washi will knockback her, opened to a free killing blow. After that, repeat ad nauseam.

Literally, she can't do a single move.

          Profit

I can use whatever build/weapon i like for every boss up until i fought Maria, Worst boss in the game, i shouldn't have to adjust my build to spam slow charms or whatever for just one poorly designed boss. The dual fight of Yuki Onna and Nobunaga was easier than her

As I went into the fight underleveled by 25, it took me 30-35 attempts to beat this *****. Headshots, onmyo buffs and incredible reflexes were required so she wouldn't one-shot me.

I normally don't complain about hard bosses, but she's annoying af and her lore doesn't back up how ridiculously op she is. Definitely not a fan of this character.

She's always in living weapon in most other difficulties, fighting her in abyss really shows how terribly designed her tells are, although it seems if you hug her face during the sword beams the projectile starts from past the end of her blade, giving you a chance wail on her

After thousands of hours in games similar in nature its safe to say I am experienced in this genre. Maria has to be one of the top 5 worst bosses for me. She is incredibly poorly designed and even after beating her on my 5th I still felt the need to make this post. Probably the worst boss in Nioh in terms of quality and mechanics.

Like that fight much more than the one of her DS3 counterpart. Even if they have the same weakness basically at least I have to aim for myself in Nioh. And she has more going on than just playing dead in a chair...

okay this chick is stupid. theres no possible way that this random emissary from spain is stronger than all the greats of japan like Nobunaga, Muneshige, all the dojo masters, etc. who by the way, William has bested all of them.
yet here she is with an unblockable 1 hit KO. moves faster than anyone in the game. never runs out of ki. kills you as soon as you walk into the room. super poor design of a boss.

Looks like I Found the Motive of Maria.

in the Yamaoka Sohachi's Novel "Tokugawa Ieyasu", a Caucassian Woman named as "Minamitsuki no Kata(南樹の方 : I Dont know this is the Right Reading because i can't found the Damn Yomigana of this Word)" has appear as Date Masamune's Spanish concubine. her real name is "Maria" too.

Yep. Maria is Motivated by "Fictional" Character.

                        • It's Lady Maria of the Spanish Clocktower!!

Okay seriously, this is such a difficult but incredibly fun boss fight. I didn't use Ninjutsu, Onmyo magic, nor Living Weapon throughout the entire fight, and it felt like I was pitted against an incredible master of speed and sword. I can't wait to see what else she has in store for the later DLCs.
