"Kote featuring a heavy right-hand piece, modelled on a Western gauntlet, and a left-hand one made from lightweight cloth that is designed to expose the fingers. This armour was used by the Obsidian Samurai, the samurai of African origin who served under Oda Nobunaga. The Obsidian Samurai arrived in Japan as a servant of an Italian missionary. When he met Nobunaga, the warlord took a liking to him and employed him in his military. He was a huge man, lauded as having the strength of ten men. This equipment was commissioned by Nobunaga especially to accommodate the Obsidian Samurai's large frame."
