Sanada is a Clan in Nioh.
Clan Analysis
The Sanada clan began as retainers to the Takeda, but eventually claimed their own base in Ueda in Eastern Shinano (present-day Nagano prefecture). Famous clan members include Sanada Masayuki and his son Yukimura.
Masayuki struck out on his own after the demise of the Takeda clan, taking advantage of the chaos after the Honnoji incident to stake a territorial claim which he then defended and enlarged fiercely. Despite being surrounded by imposing rivals like the Uesugi, Hojo, and Tokugawa clans, he manoeuvred skilfully among them, but his battles with the Tokugawa clan were particularly fierce and sowed the seeds for his eventual downfall. Offering his second son Yukimura as hostage, he finally entered the service of Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
The family crest "Sanada Rokumon-sen" depicts six coins, said to be the price the dead must pay the ferryman of the underworld to take them across the Sanzu river. This symbolised the Sanada clan's preparedness to die at any time.
