Clan Analysis

The Sho clan were a royal family that ruled over the islands of the Ryukyu Kingdom (present-day Okinawa prefecture). Sho En and Sho Nei were among their most famous leaders.

Descended from a powerful family that crossed the sea from Yamato long ago, the clan remained isolated due to their remote location until the formation of the Edo Shogunate. They were then invaded by the Shimazu clan of Satsuma (Kagoshima prefecture), at which point Sho Nei was forced to surrender and they were placed under the shogunate's leadership. Although they served the Tokugawa Shogunate, they continued to pay tribute to China's Ming dynasty and engaged in trade with various other southern islands. As a result of their dealings, they bore the influence of many foreign cultures, including a fighting style that utilised a tonfa.

The family crest, "Hidari-mitsudomoe", features a triple comma-shape design that resembles a vortex or several magatama. It is often used in formal shrines, or as the divine symbol of Hachiman, a god of war. It is said the crest offered protection from flooding.
