Yasuke is a Boss in Nioh. This is the first Boss that players will encounter. The player will have to face this yokai in order to proceed with the game.

Yasuke was a samurai of black African origin who served under the Japanese hegemon and warlord Oda Nobunaga in 1581 and 1582. The name "Yasuke" was granted to him by Nobunaga, although why and when is unclear. His original name is not recorded in any known source, so it is unclear if Yasuke is a Japanese rendering of his previous name, or a wholly new name granted by his lord.

Lore / History

Yasuke is the earliest known example of a foreigner becoming a retainer to a daimyo. He was an African believed to be from Mozambique. Yasuke arrived in Japan in 1579, the servant to Italian Jesuit missionary Alessandro Valignano. Due to his appearance and ethnicity Yasuke drew attention from the Japanese and eventually earned the interest of Oda Nobunaga. Nobunaga took a shine to Yasuke and eventually made him a personal retainer, awarding him a ceremonial sword, a residence, and the title of Nobunaga's personal weapons bearer. Nobunaga was very fond of Yasuke, having many conversations with him.

In 1582 Nobunaga was attacked by his retainer Akechi Mitsuhide at Honnouji and committed seppuku. Yasuke was there and managed to flee to aid Nobunaga's son and heir Nobutada, though unfortunately Nobutada followed his father in death. There are no records of Yasuke after this. He served as the central protagonist in the historical children's novel Kurosuke and has been featured in numerous adaptations of Nobunaga's life.
