Sakata Kintoki is a Boss in Nioh. He is an axe-wielding samurai who prefers slow but powerful attacks.

Sakata no Kintoki was a warrior of uncanny strength in the Heian period (794-1185), better known by his childhood name, "Kintaro" but also known as "Kaidomaru", the "strong child". He was born in Ashigara in Suruga province (eastern Shizuoka prefecture today). After coming of age, he served Minamoto no Yorimitsu, eventually becoming his right-hand minister and one of his "Four Celestial Kings". When Shuten Doji and his band of Oni descended from the mountain to terrorize Kyoto, Kintoki went with Yorimitsu to their lair and is said to have defeated them with ease. He died of a sudden illness while on an expedition, but he was so beloved by the people for his gentle nature and incredible strength that he continued to be worshipped as a god, sometimes even taking physical form in the world again. He used to turn bright red when exerting himself, with his cheeks an even deeper crimson, and red "Kintoki" beans are named after him.

Yokai Lore / History

Sakata no Kintoki was a warrior of uncanny strength in the Heian period (794-1185), better known by his childhood name, "Kintaro" but also known as "Kaidomaru," the "strong child." He was born in Ashigara in Suruga province (eastern Shizoki prefecture today). He used to turn bright red when exerting himself, with his cheeks an even deeper crimson, and red "Kintoki" beans are named after him.

Kintoki was so unblemished and pure of heart that he was able to commune with animals. He is said to have sparred with bears and other beasts he met on Mount Ashigara. The terrifying strength that was the basis of his fighting style was the result of these training sessions with his wild companions.

After Kintoki's death, his followers erected a shrine in his memory. They called it Kurikara Shrine, using a word that means "valor," and it became a popular destination for parents wanting to pray for their newborn sons to grow up strong and healthy. A tradition also arose from dressing babies in the same sort of red smock that Kintoki wore as a child.

Notes & Trivia

  • Kintoki also features as a guest member of your team in the "Greater Demon Hunting" Side mission.

After doing some research, it seems that the name is spread throughout multiple series, not as obvious as it seemed. Still, it's a fun fact.

Getting into the game just now.. Why has nobody mentioned the very obvious reference to Gintama here? Sakata Gintoki is the main character, sometimes addressed Kintoki. (Gin = silver, Kin = gold)
