Uesugi is a Clan in Nioh.
The Uesugi clan controlled Echigo (present-day Niigata prefecture) and several other provinces in Eastern Japan. They had been feared as warriors since the Kamakura period centuries before. Famous clan leaders include Uesugi Kenshin and Uesugi Kagekatsu.
Though famed for their military record and position as Shogun's deputy in Eastern Japan, the Uesugi clan were brought to the brink of ruin by infighting before being revived by Nagao Kagetora, who would later take the name Uesugi Kenshin. Kenshin was called a "god of war" for his martial prowess, and led the clan in a violent clash with the Takeda clan at Kawanakajima and repeated territorial skirmishes with the powerful Hojo and Oda clans. Although Kenshin's sudden death sparked a succession crisis, Uesugi Kagekatsu managed to unite the warring factions and take control of the clan. After swearing allegiance to the Toyotomi clan, Kagekatsu was rewarded with control of Aizu and turned against Tokugawa Ieyasu, ruler of Eastern Japan.
The family crest, "Take-ni-tobisuzume", shows two sparrows flying through a bamboo thicket and can ultimately be traced back to the Uesugi clan's ancestral connection with the Fujiwara nobility. The two sparrows are said to be mates, and the crest is also known as the Uesugi Bamboo.
